Each student will be given one visual work of art and one piece of music.
They then write a passage about each of these works, and will be graded on
sense of musicality, composition, style and history. In addition, each child will
be required to create a work of art (drawing, poem, song, sculpture,
movement piece) that is inspired by something in their own life experience.
Parents must be sure to include in the application form a list of any and all art
related studies the child has done.
Once a student is accepted into the Academy, they will have periodic exams
in ballet technique, music and art. All students in the Academy will be required
to do a basic study of music. Students who are studying musical instruments
privately will receive a waver from the study for as long as they are in this
other regimen. However, all students will be expected to pass the music
examinations that will be given periodically.
There will be cumulative extra credit awarded for ongoing study of a foreign
language. This credit helps toward entry into the Upper School.
Specialty classes will be offered (pointe, variation, partnering, men’s
technique) and will be recommended by the Head Master of the school for
particular Lower School students when it is determined they are in need of
that particular expansion to their work.
