Music is the life blood of the dance. Until very recently in the history of
theatrically presented dance, music has always been the foundation. Many
famous composers have contributed to the considerable body of works that
have been choreographed. And even in works without a composed or
improvised musical score, rhythm and pulse are nearly always underlying
foundational elements to dance. Hence, the understanding of music is an
essential foundation of classical ballet.

The Musical Arts Department of the Academy oversees the musical education
of students from their first entry into the Academy, through their eventual
graduation. They begin with classes in musical awareness, the history and
appreciation of music, and proceed to learn to read music, understand the
basic principles of musical theory, etc.
