MFAB facilities have recently been expanded due to the contribution of a professional digital film overhead projector. This projector is the sort used in normal movie theaters that have digital projection capability. Because of this generous donation, therefore, the National Arts Group is in the process of developing an ongoing Friday Night Film Series. The series will present every sort of dance related film, from classics like The Red Shoes, to special documentary and television productions, to movies that have ballet stars as actors (White Nights, and Valentino, for example), to opera film that features ballet (La Traviotta featuring Carla Fracci), and mainstream dance-rich feature films (West Side Story, High School Musical, Cry Baby or Stomp the Yard, to name a few). Themed film series will be presented, and eventually we aim to develop our own independent film series of all films that include dance in some form. Whenever possible, the stars of the films shown, or experts on the subjects in the films, will be present to address the audience and give Q&A opportunities to the audience. MFAB director, Ken Ludden, has several films that have never before been seen by the public. These include transfers to digital format of the private 8mm and 16mm films Rudolf Nureyev asked Ludden and others to take of all of his performances, the Washington, DC memorial service in memory of Dame Margot Fonteyn, class tapes of famous teachers and dancers, and the video record of the Kennedy Center's Tribute to Nureyev, produced and directed by Ken Ludden in affiliation with the American Film Institute. There is a wealth of footage available to scholars, as well, and special screenings can be arranged for school groups, dignitaries, visitors, and various groups. |
