Touring will be possible for the American National Ballet due to its planned affiliation with existing railroad companies. While most companies find it more and more difficult to afford extensive touring, American National Ballet has found a creative way around some of the tremendous costs of touring. Doing this while offering public performances free to the public allows us to achieve our Mission Statement in a very rich way. American National Ballet plans to custom design and maintain nine train cars for the ballet, and an additional two when touring with the orchestra, created exclusively for the use of the company. The first two cars will be completely filled with sleeping compartments, providing room for 20 people in each car to sleep comfortably. Each compartment in these cars, will house two people, has its own small bathroom, and storage for the personal clothing and supplies of the two people. While it offers less room than a college dorm, the compartments are assigned to dancers and personnel for the entire season, so they can make themselves at home and even decorate their mini-apartment to create a semblance of home away from home. Another car will be customized to have roughly half of it containing an additional sleeping room for 12 people, and the remainder of that car contains a lounge for dancers and staff to gather in small groups. While it is not possible for the entire company to gather in this area, it will be comfortable and can even offer some feeling of privacy and serve as a living room. Between this lounge area and the dining car it is possible for all company members, and technical and administrative staff members to gather. The maximum touring company, before orchestra, will be thirty-six dancers, and sixteen staff and crew other than the directors who will have their own car. The next car will house the kitchen and dining room. The dinning room will sit 30 at one time, and the kitchen can be used by individuals to prepare simple meals. A planned bank of refrigerators allows each person to have his or her own food locker. The next car will contain storage and freight. This car stores the Traveling Theater and all set dressings, lighting fixtures, road boxes, and tools. The wardrobe car will come equipped with a complete wardrobe workshop, storage area for the costumes for the tour, and other materials. In addition to cutting table, fitting rooms and sewing stations there will be laundry machines available on a schedule to company members for personal use. Due to the large volume of laundry needs, however, the wardrobe mistress/master governs the use and schedule completely and may elect, depending on their willingness, to have the wardrobe staff collect and launder clothing for the company. The final car will be the administration car, which houses the administrative office spaces and living quarters. It will contain a formal conference room, three small offices and two apartments. These cars are can be attached to any train on an existing scheduled run, giving extreme mobility to the company and a feeling of home as they travel. It eliminates the cost of hotels completely, as well as airfare or, in the case of bus tours, bus rental and driver salary. But the savings does not stop there. The availability of the administrative office car and the wardrobe car allow the company to need less space in their rehearsal home base in Peekskill, New York. |
